FORBUS GENERAL STORE
Pall Mall, TN
(pop. 1192)
In the mountains of north central Tennessee is an old country store that's the real thing.

Established in 1892, Forbus General Store has served the needs of locals -- and many a traveler -- for over 100 years.

Whether you need a new broom, roofing nails, a coonskin cap, a quick lunch or a big wooden Indian, they can take care of you.

But they don't do coffins anymore. (In olden times, they had a do-it-yourself coffin-making shop upstairs.) ----- >

Today, Forbus is famous for homemade fudge (8 varieties), $1 ice cream cones, homestyle lunches and huge wood carvings.

We admired the wood sculptures, but being on a motorcycle, taking one home was out of the question. --- >

< --- We passed on the lunch special too (fried bologna sandwich, $1.59), but we did sample their great ice cream, and stuffed our saddlebags with some fine jams and jellies made by local ladies. --- >

They don't put on airs here. A hand-lettered sign announces the forthcoming "World Pig Championship. --- >

Forbus General Store is where the card game "Pig" originated. There's a game of Pig going on most every day.

Every time we've been by, (July '06 and Sept. '07), locals were gathered around the table in back, visiting, staying cool, swapping local news ...and, of course, playing Pig.

In the winter, they fire up the pot-bellied stove and... play more Pig.

A plaque in the restroom displays newspaper stories featuring Forbus store and its unique history.

Forbus General Store can be found at 3902 North York Hwy, Pall Mall, TN. (Just north of Jamestown)

UNUSUAL PUBLIC SERVICE
In the early days, Forbus' upstairs served as a do-it-yourself coffin shop for locals. When someone died, their family could come here, go upstairs and build their coffin. Forbus Store supplied the tools and materials.
