A tugboat approaches the bridge, pushing a barge loaded with coal.
Notice how fast the river is running - at or near flood stage.

But the bridge didn't open, and the boat can't stop. Notice that the tug
has released the barges and is backing up as hard as possible.

But the current's too strong. It carries the tugboat sideways and sweeps
it under the bridge.

Since the river's too high for the tugboat to fit under the brige, the river sucks the tugboat under
Incredibly, the tugboat pops back up on the other side.
The wheelhouse door and the door on the second deck are now open.

It's mighty low in the water, but it's still afloat. If you look closely,
you'll see that the bridge's guardrail is underwater. The current is fast!

Look at the water pouring out of the second deck doorway.
The working deck is still underwater, but the boat is rising, not sinking.

Notice the smoke coming from the exhaust? The engine is still running!
The final shot shows the propwash at
the rear of the tug. It's upright
again, and back under power. |

The tale of
the tugboat that wouldn't sink
Look at each
picture carefully -
in order --
right
to the end.
If not for the photos,
no one
would
believe
this could happen.
